Apple CarPlay on Volvo (1)

Volvo initially teased us with its new in-car control system to be unveiled at Geneva Motor Show. It happened just a few days before Apple officially announced its new infotainment system — CarPlay — that will be included in its partner cars by the end of this year. The first three partners cars with CarPlay integration shown off are the Ferrari FF, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and of course, the Volvo XC90, where they’ll be offered first.

The initial video from Volvo was longer, showing off its large portrait touch display on the XC90 SUV. Here you’ll see a clearer view of the display but CarPlay is no where to be seen.

Right after Apple’s announcement, Volvo finally unveiled its implementation of CarPlay. The portrait display is still present, along with Volvo’s user interface, but integrated on a smaller landscape rectangle at the bottom of the display, is CarPlay’s UI. On the video, the two blend very well together allowing the driver the ability control Apple’s apps and Volvo’s in-car controls (like the air-conditioner slider) simultaneously.

Just like the rest, Volvo’s CarPlay feature will require a wired connection at first, promising WiFi connectivity in the near future. From what we understand, the CarPlay ‘OS’ and its features are pulled from the connected iPhone to the head unit directly, meaning all future software updates will be first updated on the iPhone (5s, 5c, 5), and subsequently delivered to the infotainment system when connected, without the need to update it at a service center.
