Last Friday, Motorola announced the successors for both Moto X and Moto G but those were not the only big news that came out at the opening of its Chicago HQ. Motorola also introduced 2 more new devices and 2 additional accessories.
Moto 360
The first one needs no introduction as it’s been making the rounds for a while now. The Moto 360 is the first Android Wear device to sport a circular display/watch face. It is elegant, classic and yet a very modern timepiece. It boasts excellent craftsmanship, has been produced with quality materials and would even work as a dress watch. Moto 360 has a stainless steel case, Horween leather straps, and Corning Gorilla Glass for the watch face.
The watch itself is not a secret as it has been featured and discussed before, with Motorola even running a contest to pick out the best watch faces for it. What’s interesting though is that the price was never revealed till now.
Moto 360 is priced at US$ 249.99 (~RM 800), comes with either black or grey leather strap options and is preloaded with 6 different watch face designs. The watch can be bought online through the Moto 360 site and you’ll get to see the breakdown of the watch there. (A neat trick with that site: the Moto 360 featured there will actually show your current time.)
Moto Hint
This one caught everyone by surprise but even then, when the event invitation went out, some people were able to predict what was coming. Moto Hint is a discreet wireless earbud that is incredibly small. Motorola has in fact made something like this in the past, called H9. Moto Hint even has a similar charging/carrying case as H9. This time around, Motorola has discarded all the physical buttons and went ahead with voice commands.
The headset has been designed to work with Moto X, specifically with the voice commands and Google Now feature that’s available on that phone. This makes it a wearable rather than just a another Bluetooth headset. However, Moto Hint does come with one capacitive touch button which allows it to work with other Bluetooth enabled phones (with severely limited capability). The earbud has infrared sensors that detect when the device is in the ear and turns it on automatically. It’s just as easy to shut it off as well; just remove it from the ear. The Hint has a battery life of around 3 hours but the beautifully designed carrying/charging case can stretch that up to 10 hrs in total, with 2X extra charging.
Moto Hint is priced at US$ 149.99 (~RM 480) and will be available later this fall. Customers in the US can register their interest on the product site and Motorola will contact them as soon as the device is available.
Power Pack Micro
Here’s a portable battery pack that Motorola took and added another useful feature: key finder. This device is more of a gimmick than anything but it still is an interesting concept. Why add on devices that we need to carry when one can just integrate the features onto existing devices? We saw that with smartphones and now it’s the turn of the humble power-bank.
Power Pack Micro includes Motorola Keylink which not only allows a smartphone to locate the battery pack itself, as well as the attached keys, but also to locate the phone using the battery pack. This is somewhat useful but I’m really not sure if it’s worth the US$39.99 (~RM 128) asking price for pack that has a capacity of only 1500 mAh.
Motorola Turbo Charger
The last one on the list is something all phone manufacturers should work towards to. Good thing then that the Quick Charge 2.0 technology behind this charger was developed by Qualcomm, the Snapdragon chip manufacturer, as there are now plenty of compatible devices using their chip. The technology is built into devices that are powered by Snapdragon 800 series, 600 series or 400 series processors. Now, charging doesn’t have to take hours like it used to. Just 15 minutes with the Motorola Turbo Charger and there’ll be enough juice to power a Moto phone for up to 8 hours.
