Hackerscape is Malaysia’s latest community coworking space for makers and tinkerers and it is organizing its first ever event that invites both professionals and enthusiasts to create and bring their ideas to life, utilizing hardware and software. The first Hackerscape Malaysia 2014 event will take place on November 29th, from 9:30am to 4:30pm in SSTwo Mall, Jalan 19/16, Seksyen 19, 46300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Apologies for not covering this sooner, as the tickets have been sold out. You might still be interested to its other session happening on December 13th in the same complex.
Founded just last month in October 2014 by two engineers, Clarence Chew and Jia Shern Tan. This coworking space aims to raise awareness as well as to kick-start the hardware development community here in Malaysia. They also offer memberships to individuals and groups to use their equipments and tools in the 3000 square feet space. Every now and then Hackerscape will also organize workshops plus offering other resources to assist in harware development. As mentioned, it is open for everyone, whether you’re an artist, builder, developer, entrepreneur, hobbyist, tinkerer, or just curious on how things work.
Its inaugural Hackerscape Malaysia 2014 event features the Raspberry Pi B+ in an 11-part workshop that will happen from 9:30am to 4:30pm as mentioned. Attendees will get to play with the new Pi, learn how to set it up, use it to read light and temperature of the sensor surroundings, control lights and LEDs, move motors around, plus explore the endless possibility Raspberry Pi can be used for home automation.
Unfortunately, the ticket has been sold out, but the standard ticket is RM120, and if you were to get a ticket with the Pi B+, that’s RM240. You’ll get to use these tools as well during the workshop:
- Raspberry Pi B+
- Arduino
- 3D printers
- Soldering kits
- PlayStation 3
- Xbox 360
The second workshop will take place in the same VLT Hackerscape venue, on December 13th, from 9:30am to 4:30pm. While the first event is more like and official launch with a workshop on the side, this one will be a full-on workshop, aiming to break down the barriers of design and manufacturing hardware, with the help of 3D printers. Not only will you get to learn the basics of how it works, you’ll also get to set it up, design a blueprint, and print it out as a souvenir. Here are key takeaways of the 3D printing workshop:
- The basics on how 3D printers work, the different types of printers, and the materials used. You can also find out the range of things you can print with a 3D printer, and how expensive it is to use one.
- You’ll get to 3D-design your own object from scratch, and print it out too
- The initialization and the basic setup of a 3D printer
