Lenovo VIBE X2 Pro

Lenovo’s Vibe Series is generally successful to the company as smartphone brand, as we would immediately associate Vibe smartphones to be on the higher-end spectrum, compared to its more convoluted A Series and S Series model numbers. The only other more straightforward group, would be the Lenovo P Series, that emphasises on a great battery life. Over at CES 2015 a few weeks ago, Lenovo showcases its two new smartphones — the Vibe X2 Pro and P90 — and we’ll be talking about the former here on this piece. But first, let’s refresh our memories about the rest of the Vibe lineup. The first in this series (though not branded Vibe) is the Intel-powered K900 smartphone, which was succeeded by the Snapdragon 800 Vibe Z (K910), and then, the high-end Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AC Vibe Z2 Pro (K920). There was this Vibe Z2 announced shortly after, but we haven’t even covered this one due to two things — one, it is running on a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 that while is newer, it may not be faster than the Snapdragon 800 of the Vibe Z; and two, Lenovo Malaysia hasn’t listed it on the Vibe Series page, so Vibe Z2 may never be officially sold here.

Vibe X2 Pro follows a more straightforward path, to be Lenovo’s decent mid-range smartphone lineup. Both Vibe X and Vibe X2 are powered by MediaTek processors (quad-core MT6589T and octa-core MT6595M respectively), but the X2 Pro opts for the newer, 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615.

The display has inched closer towards phablet territory, now at 5.3 inches of full 1080p IPS LCD goodness, which translates to around 416 pixels per inch. Vibe X2 follows the same look as its lower-end sibling, the X2, to have a beautiful four-color layer design, on a flat body with sharp-angled edges. X2 Pro comes in Champagne Gold, Electric Blue, and Rock Pink, but the sandwiched colors also include black, blue, red, and white.

Here are the rest of the specifications:

  • Dimensions: 146.3 x 71 x 7 mm
  • Weight: 140 grams
  • Display: 5.3” IPS LCD, 1080 x 1920, ~416ppi
  • Camera: 13MP front, 13MP back
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 615
  • CPU: 1.5GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 and 1.0GHz quad-core Cortex-A53
  • GPU: Adreno 405
  • RAM: 2GB
  • ROM: 32GB
  • microSD: Up to 128GB
  • SIM: Dual nano-SIM
  • Data speed: Up to Cat4 LTE
  • WiFi: 802.11ac dual-band
  • Bluetooth: Version 4.0 Low Energy
  • Other connectivity and features: A-GPS, GLONASS, FM radio
  • Operating system: Android 4.4 KitKat with Vibe UI 2.0
  • Battery capacity: Non-user-removable 2410mAh Li-Po

Most of the hardware specs are decent here: 2GB RAM, 32GB ROM, Cat4 LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, among other things. There is no mention of NFC at this point, and the 2410mAh Li-polymer battery may not give it a decent battery life, but get this — the Vibe X2 Pro has an insane 13-megapixel front facing camera, currently only matched by a few devices like the HTC Desire Eye, Oppo N1, and surpassed by the Oppo N3.

Because it has a camera that high in resolution, Lenovo is pairing the phone with a ring flash accessory, called the Vibe Xtension Selfie Flash. It is just a thumb-sized ring flash that plugs into the 3.5mm port. It has a 80mAh embedded rechargeable battery, and only uses the audio jack to synchronize the flash and the shutter release. It has eight diffused LEDs and could flash up to 100 times before needing a recharge.

It remains to be seen whether or not the Lenovo Vibe X2 Pro will make its way to Malaysia, but we sure do hope so. It is scheduled to be “available” beginning in April 2015, but the pricing is not yet known. Check out Lenovo’s CES 2015 product showcase site for more.
