Aside from the two Lumia devices, Microsoft also took the opportunity to showcase their upcoming Windows 10 for phones at its MWC 2015 event. The team showed off how features like universal apps (one single app that runs on all types of devices), Skype and text message integration, and built-in MS services will work on the phone. Seamless switching between tablet, phone, and PC make the upcoming OS an exciting one indeed.
The features were previously showcased during Microsoft’s Windows 10 event but this time around, the team also demoed the new Project Spartan browser running on a Windows 10 build. The browser has been designed to adapt to whatever display size and device it is on; be it tablets, PCs or smartphones. The universal drive direction feature looks to be very useful. A search using the browser automatically displays additional info for places (such as a restaurants), and then hands over the location detail on to HERE Maps. The reading mode is another interesting feature of the browser whereby, users can change the reading background to dark. This should win some points with those who don’t prefer (read ‘hate’) Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. The bowser is also capable of saving articles to be read later but we’re not sure if that means saving them offline; either in the browser or via OneDrive.
Instead of residing as an external app, Outlook will now be built into the operating system. It will include in-line editing from within the app, and will allow for rich text formatting. Email recipients can format a reply right there on the mobile device.
If you’re excited to try these features out as they’re being built, you might want to sign up for the Windows Insider Program and find out how you can download the Windows Insider app to your device. Please note that the build is only available for Lumia 630, 635, 636, 638, 730, and 830 for now.
Coming to the last bit, which is probably the one thing that got everyone’s attention (including iOS and Android fans), is the low-key Universal Foldable Keyboard. The keyboard has a 125.3 mm height, an 11.5 mm thickness, as well as a 147.6 mm width when folded, and the latter can then double up to 295.1 mm when it’s ready for use. The keyboard uses Bluetooth Smart (4.0) technology to connect to other devices that comes with HID (Human Interface Device) support. The keyboard comes with water-repellent keysets, one-touch switching between tablet and phone, and a rechargeable battery that can last up to 3 months on a single charge.
What wouldn’t go down too well though is its price. The keyboard has a manufacturer suggested retail price of US$ 99.95 (RM 363) and is expected to start selling in July.
