Logitech G series just announced a new addition to its portfolio, named the Logitech G610 Orion Brown backlit mechanical gaming keyboard. Just like the G810 Orion Spectrum announced earlier, G610 Orion Brown has a very understated design without the sharp edges that would give it away as a gaming keyboard, unlike the G910 Orion Spark for example. In fact, G610’s shape of the keyboard and keys are almost identical to G810, except that G610’s keys feature the Cherry MX Brown mechanical switches, and are backlit with bright white LED lights (G810 is RGB-backlit with Romer-G mechanical switches). Being lower-end than G810 does have a slight advantage — G610 Orion Brown will be selling for RM599, RM200 cheaper than G810. Both will be available for the Malaysian market from April 2016 onwards, from MCL Berhad.
Run Logitech Gaming Software (LGS) and you’ll get the ability to personalize brightness for each key, to match your style, the environment, or what game you’re playing at the moment, You can choose to only light up the keys required for that particular game, for instance. However, judging by the animated GIF from Logitech itself, the backlit keys don’t stand out that much from the non-backlit ones, unless you’re in a dark room. But then again, gamers (like yours truly) tend to lurk in the shadows anyway. You can also LGS to synchronize lighting patterns of the G610 (like “breathing” or “light wave”) with other Logitech G gears so that they’ll look consistent.
As mentioned earlier, G610 Orion Brown’s full-size keyboard uses Cherry MX Brown mechanical switches. It is said to be rated at over 50 million keystrokes, which is another way to say that the keys are highly durable and can offer precise control for your gaming needs. The keys have an actuation distance of 2mm, an actuation force of 45g, and a total travel distance of 4mm. Logitech also claims that Cherry MX Brown switches are very quiet and give a nice “tactile bump” feedback as you type.
Though having a very understated look, Logitech does put a lot of thought in G610’s design. The keyboard top has a fingerprint-masking matte texture, and even the six feet cable is braided for extra durability.
Not having additional G-Keys for macros like the G910 doesn’t faze the G610 one bit. The same LGS software can be used to program game macros into G610’s F1–F12 keys along the top row. There are also dedicated media keys like play/pause, stop, next track, and previous track buttons, plus a dedicated “Game Mode” key, a backlight on/off key, a mute key, and a huge cylindrical volume control wheel. No USB passthrough ports can be found here on the G610 though, unlike say, the G710 Plus.
Like most premium Logitech hardware, the keyboard comes with a two-year limited hardware warranty. For more on Logitech G610 Orion Brown, visit: http://gaming.logitech.com/en-my/product/g610-orion-brown-keyboard.
