Transcend-JetDrive-Go-300-with-Dual-Connectors

Transcend Information, Inc, is not a new player in the flash storage space, and just yesterday, it has released the Transcend JetDrive Go 300 for the masses. It essentially is a flash drive with both a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A connector on one side, and a Lightning connector on the other, making it compatible with recent iOS devices. Here in Southeast Asia, at least Malaysia and Singapore will be getting this device somewhat officially. This is because the company wasn’t able to provide us with a recommended retail price for it, but a quick search over at Lelong.my tells us that JetDrive Go 300 can go as low as RM259 for the 32GB model (with GST, before shipping rates). The 64GB storage model could go from RM409. That said, the official distributors for the JetDrive Go 300 are Amble Action Sdn Bhd, Alphamatic Systems Sdn Bhd, and World Tech Capital Sdn Bhd.

JetDrive Go 300 comes in Black and Silver to match your iDevices and the connectors on both sides are protected by their own translucent caps. The USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A connected is as good as they come; when connected to another USB 3.1 port in the computer, transfer speeds can go up to 130MB/s, or around just 28 seconds for a 4GB HD movie. The Lightning connector is not too great however, but the fault is not on Transcend’s part, but Apple’s; the top speed of file transfers is only 20MB/s. Even USB 2.0 can go faster than that. Transcend does put some thought into the design of the JetDrive Go 300’s Lightning connector, where it is slightly extended to take into account that many people put cases on their iPhones. Transcend also promises a low power consumption rate of the JetDrive Go 300, which is great for smaller iDevices that are not popular for their battery life.

Before you get too excited in the fact that you can finally use a USB flash drive on your iPhone, you should know that due to iOS’ limitations, any flash drive that connects to it can only transfer certain document, music, photo, and video file formats, but the supported files should be enough to satisfy most users. The files can be accessed from Transcend’s JetDrive Go app. Note that JetDrive Go 300 also has a FAT32 filesystem, so it won’t take files larger than 4GB, but then you can always reformat it to exFAT.

Also, unlike other Lightning connector flash drives from, say, unknown Chinese manufacturers, JetDrive Go 300 is MFi-certified. MFi is a licensing program from Apple to sanction third party accessories to work properly with its devices. This means that JetDrive Go 300 won’t just suddenly stop working one day after Apple updates its iOS to a new version. Transcend JetDrive Go 300 works with all iOS devices with a Lightning port. It won’t work with the seventh generation iPod Nano, but it isn’t running on iOS anyway.
