When Chromecast was launched last year, there weren’t many services that could utilise its streaming capability and yet, it was sold out immediately on Amazon.

Google continued the push to make Chromecast better with the release of its Google Cast SDK and opened up the floodgates for other developers to start making/updating their apps to support it. Google then started working on introducing its other platforms to the service and it now has added Android smartphones and tablets to the list.

With the addition of Android devices, users can now mirror everything that they see on the mobile device to the TV. All the apps, photos, videos and even games can now be viewed on a much bigger screen. Family gatherings will now be a little bit more fun. Google Earth comes alive too where, kids and adults alike, get to learn, explore and experience the app together.

The Android cast feature is currently in beta and is only available for these devices, with more to come soon:

  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 5
  • Nexus 7 (2013)
  • Nexus 10
  • Samsung Galaxy S4
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 (Google Play Edition)
  • Samsung Galaxy S5
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10
  • HTC One M7
  • HTC One M7 (Google Play Edition)
  • LG G3
  • LG G2
  • LG G Pro 2

The Android screen feature requires devices running Android 4.4.2 and above to work. For more information on setting it up, see the support page on how to Cast your Android screen from the Chromecast App.

Chromecast has a retail price of US$ 35 (~RM 111) but it is still not officially available here in Malaysia. One can still find them on many of the local online stores but warranty claims will be an issue, if and when the hardware fails. Prices in Malaysia go from anything between RM 159 to RM 200.
